The short answer
The Secure Gateway (SGW) is a control unit that filters whatever comes in through the OBD2 port. It lets you read faults and data, but blocks clearing codes, servicing functions and active tests. To unlock it you need an authorised tool and an account on the FCA portal. In the iCarsoft range, the CR Ultra and the CR Ultra P can do it.
It happens a lot: you plug the tool into a recent Jeep Renegade, Fiat 500X or Alfa Giulia, read all the faults without any trouble and then, when you try to clear them, you get an error or they simply won't clear. The tool isn't broken. It's the gateway.
What the Secure Gateway is
It is a control unit that sits between the diagnostic socket and the rest of the car's network. The manufacturer added it as protection against unauthorised access. It works like a doorman: it lets information out (reading) but won't let commands in (writing) unless the tool has identified itself first.
| Locked | Unlocked |
|---|---|
| Read faults | Read and clear faults |
| View live data | Servicing: oil, EPB, DPF, battery, steering angle, ABS bleeding |
| Identify the car | Component tests and coding on compatible systems |
Which cars have it
Most Fiat, Jeep, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, RAM and Maserati models built from around 2018, plus other recent Stellantis models. Some recent Renault, Dacia and Alpine models use a similar system. The quickest way to tell: if the tool reads but won't clear, and the car is one of these makes from the last few years, it is almost certainly the gateway.
How to unlock it
- You need a tool authorised for the FCA gateway. In the iCarsoft range, the CR Ultra and the CR Ultra P.
- Create an account on the FCA access portal (AutoAuth) and buy access. It is a separate paid service, renewed every year.
- Link your tool to that account using its serial number.
- In the car, the tool will ask you to log in when you open a locked function. From then on it works as normal.
Is it worth it? For a garage that sees FCA cars regularly, yes. For a driver with one car, it is sometimes better to read the faults with a simple tool and take the car to a garage when something needs clearing or a particular service job doing.
What not to do
There are cables and modules that bypass the gateway directly at the control unit. They work, but they mean removing trim and connecting to the car's network around the manufacturer's protection. If something goes wrong, the damage can cost far more than legitimate access. We recommend the portal.
Which tool to choose if you have an FCA car
- Car built before 2018 or without a gateway: the FR V2.0 for Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Lancia, the US V2.0 for Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge, or any multi-brand tool, such as the CR Pro.
- Recent car and you want to do everything yourself: the CR Ultra or CR Ultra P with gateway access.
- Garage: the same two. We explain the differences in CR Ultra vs CR Ultra P.
