The short answer
If you diagnose lots of makes every day and need to program control units on very recent cars, a top-end Launch gives you more. If you want a tool you pay for once that keeps getting free updates, whether for your own car or for a garage that mainly does servicing and fault finding, an iCarsoft works out cheaper in the long run.
Launch is one of the best-known diagnostic brands in Europe. Plenty of garages have an X431, so it is natural to compare it with iCarsoft when you are shopping for a tool. Both are Chinese brands, both make handheld scanners and tablets, and both read every system on dozens of makes. But they work on a different payment model, and that changes the sums a lot.
The biggest difference: updates
On Launch X431 tablets, free updates usually last one or two years, depending on the model. After that, to keep getting new cars and new functions, you have to pay a renewal every year. If you don't, the tool keeps working with what it has, but gradually falls behind.
On iCarsoft, the CR Pro, CR Pro+, CR Max and the single-brand V2.0 tools update free for life. No renewal, no fees. The CR Max updates over Wi-Fi from the tablet itself, and the button-operated tools, such as the CR Pro+, from a computer. The CR Ultra range comes with 3 years of free updates, and after that renewing is optional: if you don't renew, the tool keeps working with what it has.
For a driver or a small garage, that is the difference that counts most over four or five years. A subscription tool you stop paying for ends up not recognising the new cars coming through the door.
Launch X431 vs iCarsoft, point by point
| Launch X431 (tablets) | iCarsoft (CR Max, CR Ultra) | |
|---|---|---|
| Updates | Free for 1 or 2 years; then annual renewal | Free for life on the CR Max; 3 years free on the CR Ultra, then optional renewal |
| Systems | Every system | Every system |
| Active tests | Yes | Yes, from the CR Pro+ upwards |
| Service functions | Many, depending on the model | From 9 on the CR Pro to more than 40 on the CR Pro+ and the tablets |
| Control unit programming | On the higher-end models | J2534 pass-thru on the CR Ultra P |
| DoIP and CAN-FD | On recent models | As standard on the CR Max P and the CR Ultra |
| Where it shines | High-volume garages working on many makes | Drivers and garages that don't want fees |
What each model covers changes with every software release, so before buying either brand it is worth checking whether it does the specific function on your car. Send us the make, model and year and we will tell you for the iCarsoft tools.
Where Launch wins
Launch has been in professional workshops for many years and has a very wide range, with tablets built for all-day use. Its higher-end models offer advanced coding and programming functions, and many people already know its menus. If your garage programs control units every day, works on cars that are two or three years old and is happy to pay the renewal every year, it makes sense to consider it.
Where iCarsoft wins
- No fees. You pay for the tool and that's it. A CR Max or a CR Pro+ is still getting new cars five years from now.
- Clear steps up the range. From the CR Pro (€279.95) to the CR Ultra P (€1,749.95), you know what you gain at each step. We explain it in CR Max vs CR Pro.
- Affordable single-brand tools. If all your cars are one make, a V2.0 at €194.95 handles the parking brake, DPF and battery without paying for 58 makes you won't use. We look at it in multi-brand or single-brand.
- Easy to use. They read the VIN, identify the car by themselves and a full scan takes one tap.
Do the five-year sums
Before comparing price tags, add up what you will pay in total. A subscription tablet costs the price on the box plus as many renewals as the years you want it kept up to date. A CR Max costs the price on the box. If the tool is for your own car and you will keep it for years, or if your garage mainly does servicing and fault finding, the difference is big.
Beware of bargains. Online you will find very cheap Launch and iCarsoft tools that are clones or units with modified software. They don't update, they sometimes lock up and they come with no warranty. We only sell genuine iCarsoft tools, each with its own serial number.
So which should you buy?
- For your own car or the family's: a CR Pro, or a V2.0 for your make. We cover it in which tool is right for my car.
- For a general repair garage: the CR Max, or the CR Max P if recent BMW, Volvo or Land Rover models with DoIP come in.
- For a garage that programs control units: the CR Ultra or CR Ultra P, or a top-end Launch if you prefer its system and accept the annual renewal.
