CR Max description
The iCarsoft CR Max is a 7" multi-brand diagnostic tablet that plugs into the car with an OBD2 cable. It reads every system on 58 makes, runs active tests, has 50 service functions and codes across 8 manufacturer groups. Updates come over Wi-Fi at no cost, and it sells for €499.99.
What you gain by moving to a tablet
Three things. First, coding: adapting and customising module settings the way a main dealer would, on BMW, VAG, Hyundai/Kia, Ford, Mazda, Renault, Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge and Subaru. Second, the functions: 9 maintenance resets plus 41 more, including AdBlue, EGR, Start&Stop and NOx sensor. Third, the comfort of a 1024×600 touchscreen with 64 GB of storage and updates that install themselves over Wi-Fi.
Active tests work as on any bi-directional scanner. From the screen you open the throttle, fire an injector or run the cooling fan, then check that it responds.
Why a cable?
Because you don't want the connection to drop halfway through a coding job. With a cable there's no pairing to fail and no VCI to run flat, and the tool costs less. If it's going to sit by the car in the same bay most of the time, you won't get much out of Bluetooth anyway.
Protocols and limits
It speaks all the classic OBD2 protocols plus CAN-FD, which many recent GM models and other makes now use. DoIP, the Ethernet diagnostics on the newest cars, isn't built in: you add it with an accessory sold separately. Not sure if that affects you? We explain it in what DoIP and CAN-FD are. The 5000 mAh battery lasts around 5 hours.
The CR Max family
The CR Max BT is this same tool with a Bluetooth VCI, so you can move around the car. The CR Max P steps up to 10", doubles the battery and has DoIP built in. We compare them in CR Max vs CR Max P.
