Check the year and engine first

Both VOL tools cover petrol Volvos and Saabs from 2001 and diesels from 2004, when they moved to full OBD2. A 2003 diesel is not covered. If your car is right on that boundary, send us the VIN before ordering.

If the tool won't connect to your Volvo

It happens quite often and nearly always for the same reason: the car's energy-saving mode cuts communication with the diagnostic socket. iCarsoft recommends switching it off and making sure the tool is up to date before you start. That applies to both VOL tools.

XC60, V40, V60 or a Saab 9-3

On a diesel Volvo with an electronic parking brake, the VOL V2.0 lets you change the rear pads and regenerate the filter at home. For a petrol Saab 9-3 or 9-5, or if you only want to know what switched a warning light on, the VOL V1.0 does the job and also checks the emissions readiness monitors before the MOT or roadworthiness test.

Why won't the tool connect to my Volvo?

Usually because of the car's energy-saving mode. Switch it off and update the tool before running diagnostics.

Do they work on a 2003 diesel Volvo?

No. Diesel coverage starts in 2004.

Is there one for a hybrid Volvo?

The VOL V1.0 doesn't work on hybrids. For a hybrid, send us the model and year and we'll tell you whether the VOL V2.0 covers it.
