The short answer
If all your cars are the same make, choose the V2.0 single-brand tool for that make: it reaches every system and handles the most common servicing jobs. If you have cars of different makes or work on other people's cars, choose a multi-brand tool: the CR Pro covers 58 makes. For very recent cars with DoIP or CAN-FD, look at the CR Max P.
It is the question we get asked most. The good news is that there is almost always a clear answer: it depends on how many makes you have and what you want to do with the tool.

Single-brand or multi-brand?
A single-brand tool knows one make inside out and costs less. A multi-brand tool works on every car in the family, your friends' cars and the next one you buy. We go into it in multi-brand or single-brand. The quick version:
- One car, or several of the same make: a V2.0 single-brand tool.
- Cars of several makes at home: the CR Pro, or the CR Pro+ if you want component tests.
- Garage or mechanic who works on everything: the CR Max P or CR Ultra. We explain why in which tool to buy for a garage.
If your car is very new
Some recent cars use newer communication protocols, such as DoIP (diagnostics over Ethernet) or CAN-FD. A tool without them may read the basics but not reach everything. The CR Max P includes both; we explain when they matter in what DoIP and CAN-FD are.
Another case is cars with a security gateway, mainly Fiat, Jeep, Alfa Romeo and other Stellantis makes: they let you read faults but not clear them or do servicing without unlocking it. We cover it in the FCA security gateway.
How to check for yourself
- Find the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the registration document or at the bottom of the windscreen. It tells you the make, year and factory.
- Note down the exact model, year and engine.
- Decide what you want to do: read and clear faults, servicing (oil, EPB, DPF, battery…) or component tests.
- Open the tool's product page and check the make and functions. If you are still unsure, send us those details before you buy and we will tell you which one fits.
